This surgical speciality targets benign and malignant breast conditions. While it is widely recognised in relation to breast cancer, it’s also commonly performed to remove non-cancerous lumps.
Before we consider your eligibility for surgery, you’ll need a confirmed diagnosis through a combination of mammography, breast ultrasound and core biopsy or histopathology of the breast lesion. Every case is unique, and varied tests are necessary to ensure we devise the ideal treatment plan for you.
You don’t need a confirmed diagnosis before you make an appointment with me. As a breast specialist, my advice is to get professional support as soon as you notice a mass in your breast or feel pain in the area that isn’t related to menstruation. Other physical markers to be aware of are redness, swelling and dimpling in one or both of your breasts. Knowledge is power, and scheduling a consultation gets you one step closer to definitive answers.
Not every case is related to breast cancer, but it’s also helpful to shed light on what causes the condition. Breast cancer develops when one malignant cell starts dividing in an uncontrolled manner from the lining of the breast ducts. These cells cause superficial lumps that can be felt with a self-examination, or deeper, smaller ones that can only be detected by mammogram and ultrasound. Rest assured that this is one of the most common forms of cancer and there are various global health programmes researching prevention, early detection and pioneering new treatments.
First and foremost, breathe a sigh of relief; your health is about to be in the trusted hands of a seasoned expert.
What you can do in preparation for your appointment is write up any questions you might have, no matter how simple they might seem. I’m here to help and give you answers. You should also make a list of any medication you’re currently taking and gather all medical records and test reports on your condition if you have any.
Oh, and bring a good book or charge your phone well beforehand. That’s just to make sure time spent in the waiting room flies by.
The first step is to take a moment to celebrate progress; you’re one step further on your journey to health.
My pre- and post-operative care approach revolves around open dialogue and transparency. Here are three steps in the follow-up process you can expect after running tests or undergoing surgery:
Scheduled In-Person Visit
Timely Result Notifications
Personal Check-ins Between Appointments
Princess Marie Rivera was 32 years old when she felt a lump in her breast, which she thought would go away on its own. However, 2 months later, she came to me as there was no sign of decrease. After the breast ultrasound and mammogram showed a suspicious lump, we did a biopsy test that reported breast cancer.
She was very brave facing the news, and we decided to commence treatment right away.
The first step was undergoing a minimally invasive procedure to ensure cancer hadn't spread further. She underwent a left breast lumpectomy with oncoplastic reconstruction and sentinel lymph node biopsy in her axilla to check the nodes in her armpit. Post-procedure, we did an Oncotype DX test which showed she would benefit from chemotherapy, followed by which she underwent chemotherapy and then radiation therapy.
Remember that illness is not something you have to face alone.
